Thriller Raises Awarenes For UNC Annual Eve Carson Scholarship.

Students dance to "Thriller" for scholarship awareness
On Friday afternoon the University of North Carolina Dance Team led students in a choreographed dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to raise awareness for the Ever Carson Scholarship.

Students tapped into their inner Michael Jackson Friday as they danced the iconic “Thriller” choreography while promoting the Eve Carson Scholarship.

The annual event raises awareness of the scholarship for juniors. Winners of the scholarship are awarded money to supplement some of their school expenses senior year and a stipend for the summer.

The scholarship — which honors the former student body president killed in 2008 — is typically awarded to two students. Because of the success of fundraising, three juniors will receive the scholarship this year.

“We are embodying the scholarship, which is students celebrating students,” said Rachel Gogal, director of campus development for the Eve Carson Scholarship committee.
Members of the UNC dance team led participants in step-by-step instruction of the dance to the 1982 hit, “Thriller.”

After walking through the dance a couple of times, the music was turned up for the true debut. Following the dancing, participants and others in the Pit sang the alma mater.

Sarah Buchanan, a junior from Morganton, said she didn’t know about the scholarship before the event, but it was impossible to miss as she walked out of class.

“It’s a really easy way to promote the cause — the Pit is focal to Carolina,” Buchanan said.
After seeing the dance, Buchanan said she would consider applying for the scholarship.

Winston Crisp, vice chancellor for student affairs, and Student Body President Andrew Powell attended and danced at the event. Powell said that he has participated in the Thriller in the Pit before, but this year was the most fun.

“I feel a special connection to Eve, especially as student body president. I’ve always looked up to her and it is inspiring to see how much of an impact she still has,” Powell said.

Gogal said the event, which is in its third year, has grown in more ways than one.

Gogal said, in past years, the event has only included Thriller, but this year the committee decided to make the event longer and incorporated additional dances, such as The Wobble and the Cha Cha Slide.

Junior Miranda Barrigas danced to “Thriller” and said she will consider running in the upcoming Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education. A part of the proceeds from the race goes toward the scholarship.
Barrigas, who plans to apply, said the energy set this event apart.

“I didn’t know Eve Carson, but I think that this would embody what she would want,” said Barrigas. “I think her spirit was here today.”

Applications for the Eve Carson Scholarship will be accepted until Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.

Look Forward to a 3-D 'Thriller' video 2015

Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video going 3-D in 2015

An enhanced version of Jacko's 'Thriller' video is due in 2015.
Michael Jackson will soon be scaring fans from beyond the grave with the release of his iconic 14-minute 1983 film “Thriller” — in 3-D!

The video’s original director, John Landis, is helming the project now that a dispute with the singer’s estate has been put to rest.

The revamped short film/music video is expected out next year. There’s even discussion of its running in theaters, as well as on Blu-ray and promotional outlets yet to be decided.

“That lawsuit went on for so many years, (but) we settled and they paid me finally,” Landis said of the legal dispute. “And so, actually there is something happening with ‘Thriller.’ ”

Landis tells us: “It is going to reappear in a highly polished and three-dimensional way that is very exciting on the big screen.”

Pressed on what fans can expect to see, Landis showed his scary side.

“I cannot tell you any more,” he joked. “I might have to kill you.”

A source close to the Jackson family confirms that “John has been secretly working away on this for several months now.

“The iconic video has never been released on Blu-ray or seen in cinemas and 3-D, and that was always a vision Michael had. In fact, his ‘This Is It’ London show was meant to feature a segment which included a 3-D performance.”

We’re told there’s no end to where the “Thriller” concept can go from here.

“The estate has been looking at gaming ideas, too, and ‘Thriller’ fits into the genre,” says our insider. “It could a be a dance experience or a zombie-style,shoot-’ em-up-style movie. There are so many possibilities with this creative masterpiece.”

Official paperwork from the Jackson estate — run by lawyers John Branca and John McClain — revealed that they’re working on ventures including “multiple albums,” “Internet games” and “film, documentary and a Broadway play about Michael.”

The reported $500,000 budget for “Thriller” was more than 10 times the cost of the average video in 1983. Producers were able to justify Jackson’s risky vanity project thanks to the success of the “Thriller” album’s hit songs, which also included ““Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.”

In 2009, the “Thriller” video was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library Of Congress — the first music video to receive the honor, which recognizes works that are “culturally, historically or esthetically” significant.

Landis was honored last week at the Eyegore Awards at Universal Hollywood Theme Park in L.A. His horror movie résumé also includes “An American Werewolf in London” and “Twilight Zone: The Movie.”

Michael Jackson visits Charlotte Masaryk orphanage in Prague 1996

In 1996, Michael paid a visit to Charlotte Masaryk orphanage in Prague, and the director of the orphanage commemorated his visit.
"I believe that children observed what is missing in today's life: the immediacy, the truth, and a completely natural behavior...  It was Friday, 6th September 1996, and Michael visited our orphanage in Zbraslav, Prague. It was a unique and unforgettable experience, both for children and for us adults. Michael was in our orphanage for almost an hour. During that time he was natural, quiet and pleasant. His relationship with the children was very honest. I think he's a very sensitive, gentle and modest, almost shy man. We were  very pleased that we had the opportunity to know him from a different angle rather than all we hear through the television and the press..."

Excellent In Depth Book Review : "Dangerous 33 1/3" by Dr. Susan Fast

"Dangerous” by Dr. Susan Fast
Book Review by Karin Merx

Abstract
Dangerous by Dr. Susan Fast, volume 100 33 1/3, Bloomsbury, ISBN: PB: 978-1-6235-9; ePDF: 987-1-6235-6102-4; ePub: 987-116235-6156-7

'Dangerous’ is a must read
for every Michael Jackson fan, non-fan, critic or music lover.
Dr. Susan Fast meticulously researched Michael Jackson’s 1991 album in a way that has never been done before and in doing so she puts Jackson back where he belongs; in the spotlight as the highly talented black musician and artist he was… and he was dangerous too!
The book also makes readers want to re-listen to the music and re-watch the short-films again and again.
______________________________________________________________
Book Review
Fast structures the book by dividing the songs on the Dangerous album into categories: ‘Noise’, ‘Desire’, ‘Utopia’, ‘Soul’ and ‘Coda: Dangerous’. Before she starts analyzing the songs, she places them in the context of the time addressing the problems that surrounded Jackson, to make clear this album is by no means the end of his career but foremost the start of his adulthood. Fast explores the use of noise in the Dangerous album, Jackson’s adaptation of hip-hop and classical music through his own interpretation and she integrates his short-films into the discourse.
Fast explores the use of noise in Dangerous, including Jackson’s adaptation of hip-hop and classical music through his own interpretation and she integrates his short-films into the discourse. On her way, Fast debunks the dominant narratives that surrounded Jackson’s life and explains in-depth how he fought against racism and other world problems, while maintaining his sense of self as a (hetero) sexual being. A closer look reveals that he is not at all the man-child that the critics persistently described him as. Counteracting these narratives is Fast’s representation of a mature intellectual man, artist and performer who knew exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it.

In the first two chapters, ‘Noise’ and ‘Desire’, Fast takes us along on a journey of the album’s first six songs. She dissects them, places them in context what Jackson meant and what critics made of them. At one points she has to ask herself if she watched the same short films that the critics did at that time. She describes in detail the sonic enhancements Jackson used as ‘non-musical’ sounds. She writes that on Dangerous, the noises are more than just a ‘cheap thrill,’ especially the breaking glass in the “Panther Dance” where Jackson ‘unleashes his profound rage against structural racism’.
In discussing the album cover art by Mark Ryden, where the globe is the central focus of the painting, Fast defines the fundamental idea at the heart of the Dangerous album as: ‘something is breaking, is broken.’ Jackson obviously used noise as a signifier for critique and he incorporated the hip-hop soundscapes, but he did it in his own way. From this album forward, he begins to use his voice more and more roughly, adding even more grittiness, “blackness”, machismo, noise and danger.

Musician sues over Timbaland produced Xscape track Chicago.

An unknown singer/songwriter is taking producer Timbaland to court over a posthumous Michael Jackson song he believes infringes on his copyright.

                  Timbaland                                                                                             Corey Rooney

Sidney Earl Swanson claims the track Chicago, from Jackson's recent Xscape album, is a rip off of his own 2002 tune, Come Home On the Move.

According to the complaint, filed in Los Angeles federal court this week , Swanson's lawyer writes, "Defendants copied and incorporated substantial, original portions of the infringed composition in (Chicago)."

He is suing for damages from Timbaland, songwriter Cory Rooney, and bosses at Jackson's firm MJJ Productions and its parent company Sony Music Holdings, and is seeking an injunction to halt the continued sale of the track.

Xscape, which features eight previously unheard tunes recorded before the King of Pop's death in 2009, was released in May (14). The songs were updated by a range of top producers including Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins.

South Florida State College participating in worldwide ‘Thrill the World’ event

AVON PARK — South Florida State College seeks dancing zombies to break a world record and raise money for charity.

For the first time SFSC will be one of the worldwide locations participating in the annual zombie dance of “Thriller.”

The college is inviting folks of all ages to learn the Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance and join the global event 4-6 p.m., Oct. 25, tentatively scheduled at the Theatre for the Performing Arts. The site may be moved to another location on campus based upon attendance.

The college’s Performing Arts Club is coordinating the event, which will benefit the United Way, Highlands County division.

SFSC Director of Cultural Programs Cindy Garren said the event started in 2006 and went global in 2007 as a way to celebrate Michael Jackson’s music and raise money for local charities.

Garren stressed, “We are looking for zombies of all ages ... to help us break the world record.”

A lot of people have told her they can’t dance, Garren said. “It’s not about the dance; it’s about the experience.”

“Thriller” dance lessons, led by Nancy McDuffee, will be held 7-9 p.m. Oct. 1, 8, 15 and 22, in the SFSC Health Sciences Building lobby.

The dance lessons are free; you can come to one or to all of them, but participants have to be registered with the college for the event to come to the dance lessons, Garren said. It’s $5 to register to join the zombie dance of Thriller.

Everyone will dance to the 5:58 minute version of “Thriller,” she said. The dance will start at exactly 6 p.m., Oct. 25.

The event will be video recorded and forwarded to the international headquarters of Thrill the World.

After the dance, there will be a screening of the George Romero horror classic, “Night of the Living Dead,” in the University Center. Admission to the movie is free, but a donation to the United Way is encouraged. Light refreshments will be available for purchase.

Performing Arts Club Vice President Kevin Wheaton said he likes the worldwide concept of the event and also getting the community involved in the fun together at the local level.

Zombies of all ages can register at www.crowdrise.com/thrilltheworld.

An estimated $68,000 in food, clothing and charitable donations was raised.

CMT All-Time Top 40: Michael Jackson Moonwalks in at #12

Country Stars Count Down Their Favorite Artists

A list of the most influential artists in history chosen by country stars themselves, another honoree is revealed each week on CMT Hot 20 Countdown.

Michael Jackson moonwalks in at No. 12 on the list of CMT All-Time Top 40: Artists Choice.

Chris Young, Charlie Worsham, LeAnn Rimes, Kenny Rogers  Dolly Parton and The Band Perry were just some of the country stars who cited the "king of pop" as a major influence.

"You know, there's not a lot of people who have sold that many records or had an impact on music in general as much as Michael Jackson," said Young. "I have a lot of Michael songs downloaded on my phone. It probably rivals any one country artist that I have, except for a couple of guys. I mean, I doubt anybody wouldn't want to have the size and scope of his musical career, I don't care what genre you're in."

"How can you not respect and love Michael Jackson as an artist," Worsham agreed. "That's a persona that didn't exist until there was Michael.

"He was a part of so many different eras of music, and he's one of those guys who it didn't matter whether he was the most popular thing at the time or not, you had to take note of what he was doing. His influence on groove and beat and rhythm and the way he infused dancing and entertainment -- not just being a fantastic musician and singer -- is something I think we can all learn from, especially in today's world. You can't just get up and sing. You have to entertain people, and he was the quintessential entertainer."

"I think I always seem to relate [to Jackson] in a lot of ways because I was such a kid, too, when I started out," Rimes said. "To me, he is one of the best singers that's ever lived and entertainers. He had the most insane voice of any 5-year-old that I've ever heard, and the way he connected with the crowd, the way he was so multi-talented and really good at every bit of it. His music ... lived on and will live on forever."

"I met and got to know Michael Jackson pretty well," Rogers said. "There's a guy that was so troubled, but he was so talented. I watched that This Is It documentary. The guy ... had 19-year-old kids out of breath from dancing with him. ... Music wasn't just something he did. That's what he was. He was his music. He not only sang great, but he danced great. He understood what his package was and how to do it."

"Michael Jackson's one of my very favorite performers of all time," said Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry. "And actually, when we get ready to put together an ACM or a CMA Awards performance, we start by looking for Michael Jackson videos. We are always intensely inspired by his dancing but also just his presence onstage.

"You know our performance for 'Done' at the ACMs [in 2013]? There was this Michael video where he was starting his show, and he popped on to the stage somehow and just stood there. Now, we stood there for like five seconds for dramatic effect [during the ACM performance], but he stood there for about a minute. And the crowd was just roaring."

"I think it got louder actually," Neil Perry added.

"I think he's so cool because he crossed all genre boundaries, national/international boundaries, race boundaries. Everybody was in love with this guy," Kimberly concluded. "Just a phenomenal entertainer."

Check out the rest of the CMT All-Time Top 40: Artists Choice list, and find out who will be announced each Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on CMT Hot 20 Countdown.

Animated Interview of Michael Jackson Discussing Music, Perfection and Godliness.

"From John and Yoko to Tupac, PBS Digital Studios' Blank on Blank series has taken music journalists' unheard audiotapes and fused them with clever animation. Now the series has unveiled yet another amazing interview:  An intimate conversation with Michael Jackson from January 1980, years before Thriller and his ascension to the King of Pop. In the interview, Jackson – and, in a way, his sister Janet – discuss labeling music, perfectionism, meeting Quincy Jones and godliness while chatting with music historian John Pidgeon."

As told to John Pidgeon in Los Angeles, January 1980. John had to ask his questions to 13-year old Janet Jackson who relayed them to her brother before he would answer.

Amazing portrait of Michael Jackson in pennies by mosaic artist Talia Hayward.

Talia Hayward is a Zambian born artist with an instantly recognizable style. Her work needs to be seen to be believed. The mosaics contain extremely fine detail achieved through Talia’s painstaking effort, creating her portraits using thousands of Talia’s signature medium of coins as well as washers, buttons or paper.

Talia will be presenting her portraits at the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival in the San Diego area on October 11th and 12th 2014. Proceeds will be donated to Talia's charitable organisation called 'Thankful Thinking' ~ Kalingalinga Basic School project.

She decided to create an art collection of portraits made out of pennies of iconic people who have inspired her and have made a positive difference in the world. She dedicating these portraits to her cause. 'Thankful Thinking'

“Being from Zambia and having copper as the main export, I became curious as to why the penny was the only US coin made out of copper,”

On how her Thankful Thinking Organisation ties up with a penny, Talia says she discovered that a penny is the most wasted coin in the US and people just throw them away or keep them in a jar in their homes.

“I wanted to use something that is least valued, but still has a significant purpose for my portraits. I also want to bring awareness that we are a wasteful society and that what we throw away can be absolutely be useful to so many people living in poverty in Africa, Zambia in particular,” she says.

She goes on to say: “There is also a tradition where people throw pennies in a fountain to make a wish so Thankful Thinking got a wishing well fountain where people throw their pennies to make a wish but also help someone else’s wish come true.”

Subjects of Talia’s mosaic art portraits range from film and music legends to specially commissioned portraits of families, animals and world leaders. Talia says her pieces are available on request. She can create personal mosaic portraits from life or photographs.

If you would like more information about Talia’s mosaic portraits, place an order, or inquire about commissioning a personal mosaic, Taali would be happy to hear from you.
